SteamPunk Consulting is a new marketing and commercial strategy consulting business, who approached me to create their logo.
SteamPunk is a subculture that celebrates the beauty of analog, steam-powered machinery (a more traditional technology) and combines it with modern day machinery. It is an aesthetically cohesive marriage of classic style and contemporary tech.
This genre perfectly encapsulates the brand of the consulting company, which combines
classical global marketing experience with digital nativeness.

Upon researching the genre of SteamPunk, I found the visual motif of ‘gears’ to be a highly impactful concept. Its the physical mechanism that powers this retro-futuristic subculture, and cogs are a powerful symbol representing energy, stability and consistency. Gears are a classic visual device that depict technology, and are easily recognisable when contemplating SteamPunk design elements.
Something I noticed about these SteamPunk cogs was their uniquely ornate appearance. Some of them have rather beautiful decorative patterns embedded into the design of the gear: form and function married together in a uniquely striking way. I decided to explore this in a pictogram, and came up with a design which abstractly incorporates the letters S and C to act as a monogrammatic logomark.
Pairing this classic design motif with clean, geometric shapes and bright, vibrant colours adds a contemporary flair. This further emphasises the brand’s identity: a marriage between tradition and modernity.
